San Lorenzo managed to battle their way to a deserved 1-0 victory over Gimnasia in the Nuevo Gasómetro to join Boca Juniors at the top of the Primera for at least the night. Sebastián Blanco came closest to breaking the deadlock with a stunning left footed shot from distance which came back off the crossbar but the match was eventually decided a minute after half-time. Martín Cauteruccio led a counter attack and ran from his own half unchallenged before firing low past Nicolás Navarro. Pedro Troglio’s side pushed for an equaliser but could not find a way back and so ended their run of six straight victories.
Estudiantes bounced back from last weekend’s defeat to Huracán with victory in La Plata against winless Nueva Chicago but once again their lack of firepower was highlighted. After the sales of Guido Carrillo and Diego Vera, Gabi Milito has been left rather short in attack and his side toiled to beat the side rooted to the foot of the Primera despite playing against ten men for most of the match. Diego Mendoza is shouldering the burden of Carrillo’s absence and it was his penalty fifteen minutes from time that gave El Pincha victory. Rodrigo Espíndola was a little unfortunate to handle Ezequiel Cerutti’s cross after Chicago had defended so well but Mendoza made no mistake in sending Alejandro Sanchez the wrong to seal the points.
Earlier in La Paternal, Argentinos Juniors ended their run of four consecutive defeats with a point against Godoy Cruz. A pretty uneventful game ended goalless and does little to help either side.
