Jonás Gutiérrez ended his seven-year spell with Newcastle United scoring a vital goal on the final day of the season to ensure their Premier League safety and reports in Brazil suggest that struggling Vasco de Gama are eyeing the 32-year-old to perform a similar role in their battle to remain in the top flight. Gutiérrez has been a free-agent since leaving Newcastle and has been training with his old side, Vélez Sarsfield ahead of his next career move.
It has been quite a couple of years for Argentine midfielder, Jonás Gutiérrez. A fan favourite with Newcastle supporters since his arrival from Real Mallorca in 2008 it became clear that he no longer had a future at the club during 2013 when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer and told that he could leave. However, after returning to Buenos Aires for treatment and being given the all-clear the hugely popular figure returned and earned his way back into John Carver’s side just weeks before the end of the season and capped off a fairytale comeback to score the decisive goal for Newcastle United in their successful relegation battle.
Training with Vélez, where his career began, Gutiérrez has remained in shape waiting for the correct opportunity to arrive and it appears that Vasco de Gama are now discussing the possibility of adding the experienced midfielder. Brazilian sports newspaper, Lance reports that club president Eurico Miranda is studying an offer for El Galgo.
Gutiérrez knows all about the strain of a relegation fight after going down with Newcastle in 2009 but helping the club gain promotion and then remain in the league. Vasco de Gama currently find themselves in a more dire situation than Newcastle ever did, as they are currently rooted to the foot of the the Brasileirão with just 13 points from their 19 league matches.
A return to Vélez is out of the question given the club’s financial situation and so the whereabouts of Jonás’ next club will become evident soon.
