Boca Juniors overwhelming Primera B Nacional side Guaraní in San Juan was no real surprise but the first goal scorer and the manner of the goal in the 4-0 rout was a shock. Fernando Gago is not known for his goal scoring prowess but found himself on the end of a delightful flick by Pablo Pérez and clipped the ball over the head of the defender before smashing a left footed volley past Alejandro Medina. The lead was doubled just before half time with Jonathan Calleri tapping in Carlos Tevez’s unselfish pass and when Tevez claimed a goal of his own from the penalty spot just after the break, the tie was over. Andrés Chávez added a fourth with a second penalty and Boca were safely into the quarter-finals, where either Chacarita or Defensa y Justicia lie in wait.
Earlier in La Plate, Lanús did just enough to defeat Independiente in a game that was low on quality and incident. Román Martínez’s smart turn and shot gave El Granate the lead before half time and when Gonzalo Castellani fired in a second minutes after the break the match was all but won. Independiente toiled but never really looked like finding a way back in and so Mauricio Pellegrino suffered his first defeat as the manager of El Rojo. Lanús will face either Gimnasia or Vélez in the quarter finals.
