The loan signing of River Plate striker Gio Simeone is proving to be a huge success for Banfield as El Taladro recorded a third straight victory with the son of Diego scoring on all three occasions. In-form Gimnasia were the visitors to the Estadio Florencio Solá and although it was a tight game, it was decided ten minutes after half time. Simeone’s long range effort was struck well enough and slipped out of the clutches of Nicolás Navarro when the goalkeeper should have routinely palmed it away. A fine margin to decide the match but one that sees Banfield draw alongside Gimnasia and Independiente in the table.
Earlier in Santa Fe, the meeting between Atlético Rafaela and Newell’s Old Boys was essentially decided by penalties. A week after missing from the spot against Temperley, Maxi Rodríguez once more saw a penalty saved and when Newell’s were awarded a second with less than five minutes remaining, the responsibility was given to Ignacio Scocco. The former Sunderland striker drilled in what looked like the winner but deep into stoppage time, Osmar Ferreyra levelled for La Crema after Gabriel Graciani was clumsily bundled over. A share of the points for a couple of sides that could really do with a win.
