When the title is decided at the end of November, we may well look back on San Lorenzo’s victory in La Paternal against Argentinos Juniors as a crucial moment. After cruising into a first half lead with goals from Matías Caruzzo and Héctor Villalba the game looked as good as over. However, two late volleys by Ezequiel Ham and Ezequiel Garré unexpectedly brought Los Bichos level. Entering into stoppage time, Edgardo Bauza’s side knew that dropping two points in the title race could be decisive but they were handed a life line when Sebastián Blanca was tripped in the box. Former Argentinos icon, Néstor Ortigoza, perhaps the most reliable penalty taker in world football, stepped up and slotted the ball past Adrián Gabbarini for a huge three points.

Earlier in San Juan, a heavily rotated Independiente came from behind to salvage a deserved point against San Martín. With the focus on Wednesday night’s Copa Sudamericana tie against Arsenal, Mauricio Pellegrino named an almost entirely second string eleven and they went behind midway through the first half when Juan Manuel Trejo was penalised for holding at a corner allowing Damián Ledesma to smash the home side in front from the spot. There remained little between the sides and after the break, El Rojo equalised when Mauricio Victorino produced a thumping header past Leonardo Corti. Pellegrino introduced Martín Benítez, Diego Vera and Matías Pisano late on to try and snatch all the points but they were unable to find a winner.

San Martín  1 – 1  Independiente

Argentinos Juniors  2 – 3  San Lorenzo
