Racing avoided a huge cup upset last night in San Juan after being taken to penalties by Primera B side, Atlanta. Their lower league opposition had matched them throughout the 90 minutes and perhaps sensed an opportunity when La Academia had Marcos Acuña sent off just before half time. However, Mariano Pavone still fired the Primera side in front after the break and when Pablo Cortiza levelled up the numbers with his second booking it looked as though Diego Cocca’s side would be home and dry. A handball decision provided Atlanta with the chance to level and Juan Daniel Galeano made no mistake in drawing the scores level and ultimately taking the tie to penalties. Having scored in normal time, Galeano could not repeat the feat in the shootout and immediately handed the advantage to Racing. La Academia led throughout and when Sebastián Saja saved Emiliano Bonfigli’s effort, they clinched the match.

Earlier in the stadium of Colón, San Lorenzo booked their place in the quarter final with a 1-0 win against Atlético Rafaela. Martín Cauteruccio ran clear to fire Los Cuervos in front midway through the second half and despite there being further chances to score it proved to be decisive. The victory means that San Lorenzo will play Racing in the quarter final as the Copa Argentina reaches the business end of the tournament.

San Lorenzo  1 – 0  Atlético Rafaela

Racing  1 – 1  Atlanta (PENS 4-2)
