If certain rumours in the United States are to be believed, presidential hopeful, billionaire businessman and Apprentice wally, Donald Trump is looking to secure the catholic vote by purchasing Pope Francis’ beloved Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro. According to Brian Lewis of the New York Post, Trump and his business partner Alessandro Proto have an interest in Los Cuervos. Sounds ludicrous? Well don’t worry, San Lorenzo obviously think so too.

Given that Donald Trump is currently vying to be named the Republican presidential nomination one would assume he has bigger things on his plate, other than looking to buy South American football clubs. However, Brian Lewis’ earlier ‘exclusive’ reveals that Trump is actively doing just that.

Quite who these ‘sources’ are remains very unclear. Lewis goes on to say that Trump had already discussed the possibility of buying Colombian side, Atlético Nacional but baulked at the $150 million asking price. This prompted Trump to move to other targets and that has now landed him at 2014 Copa Libertadores champions, San Lorenzo. As the news story rapidly spread across the internet and was picked up by the press in Buenos Aires, San Lorenzo president Matías Lammens and vice-president Marcelo Tinelli both laughed at the reported interest.

In spite of his enormous wealth, in a country of passionate football supporters, the thought of having Donald Trump owning your club is terrifying.

As quickly as the story spread it would appear that it has already been discredited and from the man himself. Trump tweeted just some time ago….

There are not many occasions when I would proclaim to speak on behalf of Argentine football but thank god for that.
