Lucas Bernardi is quickly discovering just how tricky this managing lark really is after witnessing his Newell’s side slump to defeat in Rosario against a Colón side that had not won in nine Primera matches. Since soundly beating Racing in his first match in charge, Newell’s have failed to win again and the inexperienced Bernardi must be wondering where La Lepra’s next victory will come from. On Saturday evening in the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa, Newell’s were superior to the visitors and dominated both possession and chances but failed to find a way past Jorge Broun in the Colón goal. And here in lies the problem – Newell’s have scored just once in six matches and after striking a blank again last night they were suckered by a breakaway Pablo Vegetti goal. Despite throwing men forward, Newell’s could not snatch an equaliser and with the clásico in just a couple of weeks, they are in desperate need for a change of fortune.
Vélez ended a winless streak of their own with a 2-1 win over Defensa y Justicia in Liniers thanks to second half goals from Damián Pérez and Fabián Cubero. Pérez rifled in the opener from outside the penalty area and when Ciro Rius was sent off shortly after and Cubero headed a second, the momentum swung firmly in favour of the home side. Marcelo Benítez did manage to pull one back and set up a nervy end to the game but Vélez held on for a much needed three points.
