Rosario Central managed to remain at least on the heels of Boca Juniors and keep alive any slim title hopes with a somwhat fortunate victory over Unión. The home side certainly created the better chances and were made to rue several near misses and a decent penalty appeal that was waved away by Luís Álvarez when Marcelo Larrondo headed Central in front from a corner. Unión pushed for an equaliser but could not find a way to prevent slumping to a third straight defeat.
Sunday’s final match was a clash between two managers very familiar with their opponents as Mauricio Pellegrino’s Independiente welcomed Gabriel Milito’s Estudiantes to Avellaneda. The two managers effectively swapped clubs a matter of months ago after Pellegrino was relieved of his duties in La Plata and Milito left his role as youth coach at Independiente. Given a warm reception on his return to the Estadio Libertadores de América, Milito will have been displeased to see former striker Diego Vera give Independiente the lead shortly after half-time after a clever pass from Martín Benítez. The visitors were gifted an equaliser when Darío Herrera penalised Gustavo Toledo for a handball in the box and Gata Fernández produced a sensational panenka to level the scores. Estudiantes were reduced to ten men shortly after when Diego Mendoza was shown a second yellow card but El Rojo were unable to find a winner. A tenth draw of the season shows just where Independiente are allowing points to slip away and it is vital that they can start converting some of these into wins if they are to achieve a top six finish.
