Rosario Central closed to within four points of leaders Boca Juniors after a 1-0 win against Arsenal on Saturday afternoon in the Gigante de Arroyito. A thoroughly deserved victory despite the narrow scoreline was in part due to the excellence of Arsenal stopper, Esteban Andrade and partly due to profligacy in front of goal. Chance after chance had come and gone and it appeared as though yet another draw was on the horizon, one which would seriously dent any hopes of a title for Eduardo Coudet’s side. However, with a little over ten minutes remaining Nery Domínguez headed his first goal of the season to seal a crucial three points. Next weekend’s clásico with Newell’s is another huge match with Central chasing Boca and San Lorenzo and Newell’s desperate not only for a win but to end their rivals recent dominance in the fixture.
Lanús overcame the potential banana skin fixture away to Crucero del Norte but had to respond to an early penalty for a come-from-behind victory. Fernando Monetti stopped Ariel Cólzera’s first effort from the spot but the striker was able to pounce on the rebound and give the bus company the lead after just seven minutes. The lead held for barely a minute before Sergio González rose to thump home a header and bring Lanús back level. Before the break, González added a second with a fine run and shot into the bottom corner and Lautaro Acosta made sure of back-to-back wins with a third midway through the second half.
When you haven’t won a league match in twelve you need a little bit of luck and thankfully for Sarmiento de Junín that came in Colón. Diego Chávez’s low shot was going off-target but Colón defender, Luís Yamil Garnier stuck out a boot and diverted into his own net to gift the visitors the lead. That proved to be enough and Sarmiento were able to celebrate three points for the first time since April.
