Godoy Cruz have had their fair share of trouble over the past few weeks with supporters making their feelings towards manager Gabriel Heinze very clear. On Saturday afternoon in the clásico de Cuyo, there was still plenty of unrest in the stands and at one point it threatened to prematurely end the fixture but on this occasion it was San Martín supporters, unhappy as they watched their side let slip a lead against their rivals. Javier Toledo put the home side in front and it appeared as though their unbeaten home record would continue particularly as they were up against a Godoy Cruz side that hadn’t won in seven and had lost their previous four matches. However, Leandro Fernández bundled in an equaliser midway through the second half and shortly after converted from the penalty spot to give La Tomba the lead. The spotkick was delayed while San Martín supporters hurled objects onto the pitch and the delay caused a lengthy amount of stoppage time but Godoy Cruz held on for an invaluable victory. Gabriel Heinze tasted victory for the first time as manager and for the first time was able to witness the match from the dugout after being given provisional authorisation despite still not having his licenses in order. La Tomba will be hoping that this is the beginning of a fresh start but there is still a great deal of work to do.
Saturday’s first match of the clásico weekend was in Mataderos and Argentinos Juniors managed to come away with a valuable 2-1 win against relegation threatened, Nueva Chicago. Leandro Navarro gave Los Bichos an early lead when he helped Patricio Matricardi’s looping cross into the back of the net with just ten minutes on the clock and the hosts could consider themselves a little unfortunate when Alejandro Gagliardi hit the inside of the post with a free-kick fifteen minutes later. Finally, Chicago’s luck did change and in the 75th minute Nicolás Gimenez succeeded where Gagliardi had failed and curled in a free-kick from range. Parity lasted just five minutes and Luciano Cabral poked home what proved to be the winner after an attack down the left. Defeat leaves Chicago looking doomed with just six matches remaining.
