Tigre and their excellent home record proved too strong for Vélez Sarsfield’s young side, who continue to struggle and now find themselves down in 22nd. Federico González slotted the home side in front after a defence splitting pass from Uruguayan Jorge Rodríguez and despite seeing plenty of the ball, Miguel Ángel Russo’s side failed to find a way back into the game. Facundo Sánchez doubled the lead after the break and with minutes remaining Lucas Wilchez wrapped up the points after combining with Sebastián Rincón. Tigre are up to seventh and could still book a place in the Copa Libertadores playoff places but for Vélez the season could not end fast enough.

Belgrano’s hopes of Libertadores qualification are gradually fading after dropping another two points with a 1-1 draw against Atlético Rafaela in Santa Fe. The visitors thought they had taken the lead just before half-time when Jorge Velázquez volleyed them in front from range but with Emiliano Rigoni standing in an offside position, the linesman’s flag denied them. Facundo Parra volleyed the home side into the lead with fifteen minutes remaining but Fernando Márquez snatched a late point for El Celeste and kept them among the group chasing sixth.

In Bahía Blanca, Olimpo scored their first goal in five matches and with it their first victory as Walter Acuña’s well taken goal in the 76th minute was enough to see off the challenge of Sarmiento. One of AFA’s created ‘clásicos’ was never likely to be a classic and so it proved.

Olimpo  1 – 0  Sarmiento

Atlético Rafaela  1 – 1  Belgrano

Tigre  3 – 0  Vélez Sarsfield
