Some may have wanted to point to the apparent imbalance that the round of clásicos creates when San Lorenzo face their local rivals, Huracán, languishing down in 25th and two title rivals, Boca Juniors and River Plate face one another with just a few matches remaining. El Globo have struggled this season but shocked Primera leaders, San Lorenzo in the Estadio Tomás Adolfo Ducó to seriously dent their hopes of lifting the title.
When a little fracas needed to be separated by Sergio Pezzotta even before kick off it was clear that Huracán’s players were fired up for the clásico and once the whistle blew this became even more apparent. After a bright opening, Ramón Ábila hit the San Lorenzo crossbar with a spectacular bicycle kick but the visitors provided their own threat and Héctor Villalba rattled the woodwork at the other end.
Edgardo Bauza’s side knew that three points were needed to put pressure on Boca Juniors and Rosario Central ahead of their own clásicos on Sunday but it was Huracán that broke the deadlock. Patricio Toranzo deceived Sebastián Torrico with a perfectly struck free-kick and with the goalkeeper expecting a ball into the penalty area, Toranzo bent the ball inside the near post.
The Duco was rocking and Los Cuervos needed a response. Unfortunately, with the adrenaline flowing, Julio Buffarini flew into a challenge on Federico Vismara and was shown a straight red card and Matías Caruzzo soon followed him off after the defender was shown a second yellow.
Even with nine, El Ciclón pushed for an equaliser but Huracán held firm and secured a famous clásico victory. San Lorenzo remain a point ahead of Boca ahead of Sunday’s superclásico. Boca’s visit to the Monumental takes on even further significance now with River spying a serious challenge of their own.
