Banfield have coped remarkably well since they parted ways with manager, Matías Almeyda and on Sunday night they marked their seventh match without defeat with victory in the Clásico del Sur. Local rivals, Lanús started the better but soon lost their way and with La Forteleza no longer as difficult a place to visit, Banfield gradually grew into the match. Shortly before half-time, 22-year-old, Colombian forward, Mauricio Cuero stunned the home fans after cutting in from the left and curling an unstoppable right-footed shot beyond Fernando Monetti and into the top corner. The response from El Granate after the break was limp and with time running out, Carlos Aruajo was sent off after a crunching tackle stopped Cuero leading a counter. A fourth home defeat of the season for Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s side has them sitting in eleventh, now four points behind Banfield.
Earlier in Santa Fe, Colón were unable to make home advantage count against Unión and in a game of few clear chances it ended goalless. Pablo Vegetti missed a very presentable opportunity after half an hour but neither side could find a breakthrough. The home side had veteran full-bacl Clemente Rodríguez sent off late on but it had no impact on the result.
