After Huracán’s 5-2 thrashing of Tigre three weeks ago, El Globo were virtually assured of a place in the Copa Sudamericana last 16. It would have taken an almighty collapse from the home side to allow for Gustavo Alfaro’s side to comeback and although Huracán are perhaps capable of such calamity, Eduardo Domínguez ensured that his side completed the job. Federico Mancinelli’s well taken goal during the second half handed Huracán victory in the Estadio Adolfo A. Ducó and a comfortable aggregate scoreline to set up a last 16 clash with Brazilian side, Sport Recife.

Later in Avellaneda, Independiente against Arsenal hung somewhat more in the balance after a 1-1 draw in the first leg. In the Estadio Libertadores de América, it was the home side that dominated possession as Caruso Lombardi’s Arsenal looked spied their best chances from set-pieces and the head of Santiago Silva. After their excellent clásico victory at the weekend, Independiente were not at their best but the second half introduction of Uruguay international, Cristian ‘Cebolla’ Rodríguez lifted them. His jinking run created the space for Matías Pisano and his low cross was turned in by Lucas Albertengo for the only goal of the game. Champions of the competition in 2010, Indepediente have stated that this is a priority of theirs and so in spite of a lacklustre performance, progression was vital. Paraguayan side, Olimpia await Mauricio Pellegrino’s side, and with Cebolla and possibly Federico Mancuello back soon, things are a little more positive in Avellaneda at present.
