Belgrano’s evening in Lanús could not have gone any worse and from the first minute of the match, Ricardo Zielinski’s side faced an uphill struggle. El Granate showed little mercy in sweeping past their visitors, scoring five and ensuring a comfortable 6-2 aggregate scoreline for a place in the Copa Sudamericana last 16.

With less than twenty seconds on the clock, Lanús were given an enormous helping hand and Belgrano must have known it would not be their night. A hopeful ball down-field was misjudged by Claudio Pérez and it allowed Sergio González to get in behind and clip the ball past goalkeeper Pablo Heredia before being clattered by the stand-in keeper. The referee had little option but to brandish a red card and point to the spot and despite their protests, Nicolás Aguirre slotted the home side in front.

Belgrano admirably held firm but shortly before half time, substitute keeper Lucas Acosta could only parry a fiercely struck free-kick and Diego Braghieri was on-hand to tap in the rebound.

If there was an element of bad luck to Belgrano’s deficit at this stage, Lanús’ third crowned it off. Víctor Ayala escaped down the right and his low cross was cleared by one defender straight into Guillermo Farré and into his own net.

Jorge Velázquez pulled a goal back for the visitors but it could not halt the home side. Miguel Almirón and Gonzalo Di Renzo both finished confidently after going through on goal and completed the thrashing. Lanús will face Uruguayan side, Defensor Sporting in the last 16.

Lanús  5 – 1  Belgrano  (AGG 6-2)
