They might be outsiders for the title but Rosario Central made sure that they would remain on the heels of the league leaders with a deserved victory in Mendoza against Godoy Cruz. Marco Ruben pounced in only the tenth minute to strike his 16th goal of the season and when Marcelo Larrondo bundled in a second following a corner shortly after it appeared as though it was going to be an easy afternoon for Eduardo Coudet’s side. Just after half-time, a sweeping team move ended in José Luís Fernández slotting in a third and although Leandro Fernández smashed in a consolation goal late on, it made little difference. Central remain six points behind Boca but welcome them to Rosario on the final day so are still in with a shout.

Whilst Central have been enjoying their title bid, city rivals Newell’s have been enduring a miserable run that has not seen them win for eight matches and score only once. San Martín were the visitors to the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa on Saturday and Newell’s finally ended that unwanted streak. Former Argentina international, Maxi Rodríguez poked in the only goal of the game midway through the second half after beating Luís Ardente to a lofted ball over the top. La Lepra still remain down in 16th but will look to finish the season as strongly as possible.

Godoy Cruz  1 – 3  Rosario Central

Newell’s Old Boys  1 – 0  San Martín
