All three Argentine clubs from Wednesday night’s Copa Sudamericana progressed to the quarter-final stage but surprisingly it was Huracán who made the lightest work of qualification. El Globo drew 1-1 last week in Brazil against Sport Recife but a second half brace from Ramón ‘Wanchope’ Ábila and another for Mauro Bogado sent Eduardo Domínguez side through without any trouble. River Plate suffered a more anxious return leg in the altitude of Quito but despite suffering a 1-0 defeat on the night, were able to progress thanks to their 2-0 victory in the first leg. Narciso Mina headed the only goal of the game but Liga de Quito should have at least taken the tie to extra-time after winning a penalty late-on. A costly miss sent Marcelo Gallardo’s holders into the quarters. Lastly, Independiente made hard work of their second leg in Paraguay but held on for a goalless draw to progress.

Liga de Quito  1 – 0  River Plate (AGG 1-2)

Olimpia  0 – 0  Independiente (AGG 0-1)

Huracán  3 – 0  Sport Recife (AGG 4 -1)
