It has not been a good week for Lanús – eliminated from the Copa Sudamericana on penalties on Thursday and on Monday night, resoundly beaten by Aldosivi in Mar del Plata. Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s side were poor from kick-off and it was little surprise when Santiago Rosales headed the home side in front . El Granate needed to get to the break and regroup but any plans went out the window when Víctor Ayala was sent off for throwing a punch at Hernán Lamberti. There was little or no contact but both players fell to the turf in apparent pain and Ariel Penel decided that, at least for intent, Ayala deserved to go. Rosales added a second for El Tiburón and although Nicolás Aguirre pulled a goal back for the visitors, José Sand wrapped up victory in stoppage time.
Finally, in Banfield, Racing’s mathematical hopes of regaining the title were ended after a goalless draw. The home side were hoping to bounce back from their disappointing defeat to Boca last time out but were unable to find a way past Sebastián Saja in the Racing goal. In what was a free-flowing, entertaining match that belied its scoreline, both sides had their chances but neither could score the decisive goal. La Academia’s title challenge maybe over but they could still play a significant role in the destination of the trophy given that Boca are the next visitors to the Cilindro.
