Nueva Chicago’s remarkable upturn in form rose to spectacular levels on Saturday afternoon as Alejandro Gagliardi scored four in a five-goal demolition of Newell’s Old Boys in Mataderos. However, with results elsewhere going against El Torito, the improvement may have come too late and relegation back to the Nacional B looks likely. Newell’s had come into the match having found a bit of form but looked utterly woeful from kickoff and found themselves three down at half-time. Gagliardi had scored six all season but struck a devastating hat-trick to end the match as a contest early. Nicolás Sainz headed a fourth after the break and shortly after Gagliardi tapped in his fourth of the game. Relegation had looked a certainty a few weeks ago but suddenly Chicago looked like they could pull off an unlikely escape.

This looked all the more possible given that relegation rivals, Colón were in a real rut and in desperate need of a win. Arsenal were the visitors to Santa Fe but were unable to do Chicago any favours and instead the home side took a huge step to safety with a 3-1 win. Pablo Vegetti bundled El Sabalero into an early lead and with the visitors still sleeping, a Cristian Llama brace made it three before the half hour mark. Miguel Caneo pulled one back in the second half but the points were already in the bag and Colón now find themselves five points clear of Chicago with just two matches remaining.

Life after Gabriel Heinze could not be going much better for Godoy Cruz and after scoring seven in the previous ten fixtures, La Tomba have now netted the same amount in their first back-to-back wins of the season. Walter Serrano put Atlético Rafaela in front in the Nuevo Monumental but Juan Fernando Garro volleyed the visitors level before Daniel Oldrá’s revitalised side bossed the second half. Garro added a second before Leandro Fernández headed his twelfth of the season and Fabricio Angileri netted an emphatic fourth.

Nueva Chicago  5 – 0  Newell’s Old Boys

Atlético Rafaela  1 – 4  Godoy Cruz

Colón  3 – 1  Arsenal de Sarandí
