Argentina’s under-17s made a dreadful start to the World Cup in Chile after slumping to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of México. It took just nine minutes for México to gain the advantage when Kevin Magaña skipped, unchallenged through the Argentine defence and slotted the ball past Marcos Peano. Miguel Ángel Lemme’s youngsters scarcely threatened the Mexican goal and in truth the one-goal margin probably flattered Los Pibes. México dominated possession as Argentina failed to string passes together and all too often in the opposition half, the attack faltered as Lemme’s side appeared to simply hope captain, Tomás Conechny could produce something. Well marshalled by the Mexican defence, Conechny was more or less anonymous and it was really no surprise when the lead was doubled. Eduardo Aguirre was brought down by Peano and defender Francisco Venegas slotted the ball into the back of the net. Argentina did muster a couple of decent chances before the full-time whistle but both Matías Roskopf and Pablo Ruíz blazed over. Lemme’s boys must now face Germany on Wednesday, who enjoyed a comfortable 4-1 victory against Australia in the other Group C match, knowing that huge improvements must be made if they are to even qualify for the knockout stages.

Argentina  0 – 2  México
