The Torneo 2015 title remains Boca Juniors’ to lose but on Sunday afternoon, San Lorenzo spurned a glorious opportunity to apply pressure on the leaders and remain within striking distance. A difficult trip to Bahía Blanca to face Olimpo required victory but at just the wrong time, Edgardo Bauza’s side have seen a fatal dip in form. On the brink of half-time, after 45 minutes where both sides had fashioned chances, Hernán Encina gave the hosts the lead with a smartly taken goal after exchanging passes with Walter Acuña. The second half was only five minutes old when Olimpo doubled the lead. Acuña produced a moment of magic to make Mario Yepes look every one of his 39 years and after turning the Colombian inside-out, he smashed the ball past Sebastián Torrico. Los Cuervos were on the brink and although Mauro Matos pulled a goal back with 20 minutes remaining, they could not find another. Defeat leaves El Ciclón, six points behind Boca with two to play and saw them slip outside the automatic Copa Libertadores qualification spots.
San Lorenzo were leapfrogged by Rosario Central after Eduardo Coudet’s boys deservedly beat Argentinos Juniors in the Gigante de Arroyito and at least for now still harbour dreams of lifting the title. Giovani Lo Celso burst beyond the Bichos defence and after clipping the ball over Adrián Gabbarini, and being clattered in the process, it left Marco Ruben with the simplest of headers. Strike partner, Marcelo Larrondo skipped around replacement keeper, Sebastián Giovini to add a second and with the frustration of chasing after the ball all afternoon, the visitors had Germán Basualdo and Miguel Ángel Torrén sent off. Central sit five points behind Boca and will be relying on Tigre to spring a surprise at La Bombonera in a couple of weeks to take the championship into the final round. Boca Juniors will visit Rosario and if the title is still up for grabs, few would bet against Coudet’s underdogs.
