Not since the Copa Libertadores of 1974 have Huracán been in an international tournament semi-final but on Tuesday night in Montevideo, El Globo battled to a draw against Defensor Sporting and with it secured a place in the next stage of this year’s Copa Sudamericana. Ramón Ábila’s first-leg winner gave the visitors the advantage and the burly striker again proved to be the danger man in Uruguay, coming close in the first half when his shot from an acute angle hit the crossbar. Both sides had their chances and Huracán survived a late penalty shout when goalkeeper Marcos Díaz rashly flattened Santiago Barboza but they held on for a historic victory on aggregate. Huracán await the winners of Thursday night’s meeting between Santa Fe and Independiente.
