The dismantling of River Plate’s all-conquering side of 2014-15 is perhaps already underway; Ramiro Funes Mori departed for Everton, Matías Kranevitter’s exit to Atlético Madrid is already sewn up and now Los Millonarios have been hit with the news that Uruguayan midfielder, Carlos Sánchez will not renew his deal at the Monumental. A pre-contract agreement with Liga MX side Monterrey has already been signed and so the 30-year-old will switch to México after the Club World Cup.

Reports from México had leaked the news earlier in the week but several Argentine media sources have now confirmed that River Plate’s influential goal-scoring midfielder will be departing for Monterrey.

Sánchez has been an integral part in River’s recent successes under Marcelo Gallardo, scoring vital goals on the way to lifting the Copa Sudamericana and the Copa Libertadores. It is little wonder that Gallardo and River Plate were keen for the Uruguayan international to remain at the Monumental when his deal expires at the end of the year. However, after weeks of negotiation and news that a deal was getting closer, Sánchez has agreed to return to Liga MX after a stint with Puebla in 2013.

Sadly for River they were unable to compete with the financial muscle that Mexican club sides can flex and Sánchez has reportedly signed a three-year deal worth $1 million a year. A deal which far outweighs his current deal at the Monumental and certainly any offer on the table.

Sánchez will link up with former River striker, Rogelio Funes Mori, who has found himself in fine form this season and ex-Boca man, Neri Cardozo.
