Boca Juniors were in México on Wednesday night to provide opposition for Puebla as they reopened their new stadium and rumours were abound that it could be the last time that Jonathan Calleri wears the famous blue and gold. Since then, the story has gathered pace and the Argentine press are now reporting that misfiring, Premier League champions Chelsea are poised to seal a $10 million transfer that will bring the 22-year-old to West London in January.
Having recently completed a league and cup double, Boca Juniors have announced themselves back on the South American football scene after having to watch rivals River Plate hog the limelight in recent seasons. 2016 will bring a renewed effort to capture the Copa Libertadores and so the club, manager Rodolfo Arruabarrena and even Calleri himself are keen to attempt to lift the historic trophy.
However, like all Argentine clubs in precarious financial situations, Boca simply cannot turn down a sizeable offer from Europe and reports suggest that their $10 million valuation for Calleri has been met by Chelsea.
Calleri was asked by reporters when he arrived back in Buenos Aires on Thursday and reiterated his stance on a move away from Boca: “I’mhappy here.Idon’tknowifI‘m goingornot. The Boca president (Daniel Angelici) will have to decide.“
“I haveameeting and everything will be on the table there.ThenI will decideifI have to stayorgo. It is achance togotoEurope, but it would beashame to leave Bocanow.”
Calleri certainly isn’t itching to leave Argentina at this point in his career but Boca it seems are already planning for life without the 22-year-old. Suggestions that Dani Osvaldo could return to La Bombonera continue and if that meant that Calleri was pushed down the pecking order he said: “If the manager tells me that I would be a substitute then I would have to go.”
His exit sounds almost inevitable at this point but having previously been linked closely with Stoke City and Inter Milan, Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea are now in pole position for Calleri’s signature. It is understood that the deal would go through in January with the Boca striker being sent out on loan like so many of Chelsea’s youngsters.
However, with Chelsea currently struggling down in fourteenth position in the Premier League there is a suggestion that Calleri could be thrown straight into first team action. This may be a leap too far for a 22-year-old striker with little experience and certainly at no where near the level of the Premier League and Champions League.
Calleri ended the 2015 season as Boca’s leading scorer with 21 goals and 11 assists in all competitions and certainly benefitted in the second half of the season when playing alongside Carlos Tevez. A couple of memorable golazos, particularly his spectacular rabona lob against Quilmes, earned him a level of notoriety and undoubtedly raised his profile in Europe but it is difficult to argue that Calleri is ready for the enormous step-up just yet.
Gerardo Martino has already mentioned Calleri as a possible option in attack for the Olympic side in 2016 but it is with the future in mind. With further development perhaps the former All Boys striker could be Argentina’s number nine and a fearsome centre-forward in Europe but that time is not in January.
