Five goals in El Bosque, emphatically booked Gimnasia’s place in the next stage of the pre-Copa Sudamericana playoffs and sent San Martín packing back to San Juan. Nicolás Mazzola nodded El Lobo in front with less than two minutes on the clock and although the visitors were back level almost immediately thanks to a contentious Renzo Vera penalty, their joy was shortlived. Roberto Brum tapped Gimnasia back in front and it opened the floodgates; Javier Mendoza curled in a third before half time before a fabulous individual effort from man of the match, Fabián Rinaudo and a Maxi Meza header completed the rout.
Later in Santa Fe, Unión’s hopes of qualifying for the Copa Sudamericana were ended by Aldosivi in a match full of controversy. Referee Saúl Laverni awarded the visitors a penalty after only three minutes before finally realising he had a made a huge error and reversing his decision. Aldosivi, however, remained the better side and took the lead before the half hour mark when José Sand fired past Nereo Fernández. Unión felt aggrieved once more after the visitors ignored Marcelo Cardozo’s injury in the build-up but in truth the home side had not yet turned up. A minute into the second half Emanuel Britez headed Unión level but Sand popped up for his second of the match to give Aldosivi an excellent away win.
