Angelici wins the Boca presidential election ensuring Arruabarrena remains as coach

A record breaking number of voters turned out for the hotly contested Boca Juniors presidential race and eventually, after the 26,000 plus votes were counted, Daniel Angelici was reelected Boca president. The 51-year-old will remain in the top seat for another four years and with his victory was able to confirm that double-winning manager Rodolfo Arruabarrena will be signing a new deal and that controversial striker Dani Osvaldo will be returning to La Bombonera.

Angelici has not always had the best relationship with the vast amount of Boca Juniors supporters but on election day, when he could arrive at La Bombonera with Carlos Tevez after a league and cup double winning season, it was difficult to imagine any other outcome. Bringing the idolised jugador del pueblo back to Boca while still at something near his footballing peak and capturing a first league title since his initial election in 2011 were enough to swing this in his favour.

Even the appearance of the iconic Juan Román Riquelme at the polling stations with mate and thermal flask in hand could not sway the voters. The legendary number 10 has been a vocal critic of Angelici and although anti-Angelici chants were swung when Román cast his vote, it could do little to narrow the margin between the victor and runner-up, Jorge Amor Ameal.

Upon the news that Angelici would remain as president, he told the press: “I would like to thank and congratulate Ameal and Beraldi (the third candidate). We reaffirm our commitment for the next four years and continue to do the best for Boca.”

Former Boca president Mauricio Macri was named Argentina president only two weeks prior and he too had thrown his support behind his old ally Angelici. Boca already wield a huge amount of power in Argentine football but with Macri primed to take position in the Casa Rosada, his relation with Angelici will only be beneficial.

With his victory, Angelici was already able to say that coach Rodolfo Arruabarrena will sign a new deal with the club. Despite lifting the Primera trophy and the Copa Argentina, there are still plenty of doubters over whether Arruabarrena is the right man for the job and it was clear that Angelici’s election rivals would not have kept the services of the current coach. Ahead of an important 2016, in which Boca hope to lift the Copa Libertadores, Angelici’s victory provides the greater stability.

The sale of young striker Jonathan Calleri now appears certain and Angelici already has a replacement in line with Dani Osvaldo primed to return. The 29-year-old will terminate his current contract with Porto and come back to La Bombonera only months after his departure.

The potentially bigger implications of Angelici’s victory is his plan to build a new stadium for Boca with a greater capacity than the famous Bombonera. The idea is to construct a new stadium close to the current site but one which would be able to hold far more supporters.
