Huracán have taken a small step towards the Copa Libertadores group stage after a 1-0 victory against Caracas in Parque Patricios last night but may look back and rue an opportunity not to take greater advantage from playing against ten men for much of the match.
El Globo were without talismanic centre-forward Ramón ‘Wanchope’ Ábila after his sending off in the Copa Sudamericana final but were able to name recent signing Diego Mendoza in his place. Despite this pre-game setback, Huracán were given a boost on the stroke of half time when Miguel Mea Vitali was shown a red card for a forceful challenge on Patricio Toranzo.
Even with the numerical advantage, the home side toiled and it wasn’t until the 74th minute when Mariano González poked in a scrappy winner.
Ábila will be available to Eduardo Domínguez when the two sides meet again next Tuesday in Venezuela but El Globo still have work to do to ensure back-to-back participating in the Copa Libertadores group stage.
