Vélez Sarsfield endured a terrible 2015 and the initial impression was that it would continue into this season but led by veteran striker Mariano Pavone, El Fortín showed signs of recovery much to the surprise of Argentinos Juniors. Los Bichos are themselves likely to struggle and certainly on the evidence of Tuesday night that will be the case as they were resoundly beaten by Cristian Bassedas’ side.
Mariano Pavone was perhaps the one significant incoming transfer over the summer and the returning striker proved his value with two quickfire goals inside the first ten minutes in La Paternal. The first a wonderful low shot on the turn was rapidly followed by a well taken poacher’s finish after latching onto Yamil Asad’s header.
Two up so early was fairly uncharted territory for this recent Vélez side but they dealt with it well and when Hernán Toledo added a third two minutes after half time the points were sealed. The 20-year-old skipped between three or four Argentinos defenders before slotting the ball past Camilo Vargas.
A convincing win of this nature was exactly what Vélez needed but begins to raise alarms for Argentinos Juniors; three games played and seven goals conceded suggests Carlos Mayor has plenty of work to do with his defence.
