Eduardo Domínguez fielded largely a second-string Huracán side for the trip to Lima to take on Sporting Cristal in his side’s third Copa Libertadores group game and despite Ramón Ábila’s second half brace, El Globo slumped to a 3-2 defeat.
A weak first half performance was punished by goals from Gabriel Costa and Santiago Silva and when young defender Lucas Sosa was penalised for a push in the penalty area after 53 minutes, defeat looked certain. Sosa was sent off and Silva converted the penalty to extend the home side’s lead.
Wanchope Ábila pulled a goal back immediately and when he clipped the ball over Diego Penny with a little over 15 minutes remaining, another unlikely Huracán comeback looked possible. The triumphant finish never materialised and so El Globo still have some work to do to reach the latter stages of this year’s competition.
Sporting Cristal visit Parque Patricios next on April 5th and with the Peruvian side one point ahead, it is something of a must-win.
