Martín Cauteruccio’s headed equaliser that earned San Lorenzo a point from their trip to Porto Aregre may prove to be crucial but Paulo Guede’s side still have much work to do if they are to reach the knockout stages. The draw on Wednesday night makes Grêmio’s visit to the Nuevo Gasómetro next week all the more significant with the losers almost certainly out.
Still without a win, San Lorenzo knew that three points from Brazil would have put them in a great position to qualify but when Fred’s low free kick sneaked past Sebastián Torrico at his near post after 25 minutes Los Cuervos were in trouble.
Martín Cauteruccio’s glancing header promptly drew San Lorenzo level but try as they might they were unable to force a winner.
The result leaves San Lorenzo winless and bottom of group six with two points. Victory against Grêmio in Bajo Flores next Tuesday is paramount with Toluca possibly closing in on one of the two qualifying spots.
