Only a week ago in the Cementerio de los elefantes, Colón downed River Plate and given their decent league position El Sabalero went into Saturday’s clásico santafesino as favourites. Unión had other ideas and cruised to only a second league win of the season thanks to goals from Emanuel Brítez, Franco Soldano and Ignacio Malcorra. Under a hail of rocks close to full time, the match should probably have ended early but it only delayed the home side’s pain. A pain which was further compounded by Alan Ruiz stating he wanted out of the club after the game.
In Córdoba, Vélez scored a valuable away win over Belgrano by the finest of margins. In the opening ten minutes the home side hit the woodwork twice and on each occasion Vélez went straight up the other end and raced into a two-goal lead. Jorge Correa tapped in the first after Hernán Toledo’s lightning break and Mariano Pavone pounced on a weak header back to the goalkeeper to double the lead. Fabricio Alvarenga made it three after half time with a stinging half volley but was sent off shortly after for a stupid kick out at Mario Bolatti. With the numerical advantage, Belgrano pulled one back when Bolatti headed in from a corner but with Cristian Lema not poking in a second until the 91st minute, there was no time for an equaliser.
