Copa Libertadores knockout stage qualification in the balance and now eight games without victory, Pablo Guede is under increasing pressure to get things right in Bajo Flores. Sunday’s visit to Quilmes, still without a Primera win in 2016 until yesterday, was seen as an ample opportunity to return to winning ways but another limp performance from Los Cuervos was punished emphatically in the Estadio Centenario.
Quilmes had begun to show signs of revival prior to Sunday after four consecutive draws but Los Cerveceros leaky defence remained an issue. When Darío Herrera awarded the home side a penalty after quarter of an hour, for a hand ball by Ezequiel Cerutti, and Ezequiel Rescaldani slotted it into the net, the assumption was that San Lorenzo would find a way back into the game.
However, the visitors continued to toil in attack and so when Matías Orihuela headed Quilmes further in front shortly after half time, Alfredo Grelak’s first three points as coach looked a real possibility. Five minutes later and it seemed almost certain as Rescaldani pounced in the six-yard box and nodded in a third.
San Lorenzo never looked like getting anything and beside Leandro Romagnoli getting involved in a verbal argument with some Quilmes supporters and the San Lorenzo barra brava visiting the team hotel looking for answers, all is not well in Bajo Flores. Eight without victory has seen El Ciclón drop to seventh, five points off the top in Zone One and one defeat away from an early exit in the Copa Libertadores.
Meanwhile, neighbours Huracán are enjoying a wonderful spell and thanks to a hat-trick from Ramón ‘Wanchope’ Ábila, El Globo recorded a fourth straight league win with a 4-2 victory over Temperley.
Gonzalo Ríos scored twice in the opening 30 minutes to give the visitors a commanding lead in Parque Patricios but as we have seen on numerous occasions, this Huracán do not know when they are beaten. Mariano González quickly pulled one back from distance and a minute later, Ábila had his first of the afternoon to swiftly bring the home side level.
Ariel Cólzera was shown a red card before the break and the momentum swung in favour of Huracán. With the extra man, Wanchope scored twice to complete his hat-trick and ensure another victory for El Globo.
