Huracán jumped above Sporting Cristal into the second qualification spot from Copa Libertadores group four on Tuesday night after a crucial 4-2 victory in Parque Patricios. With Atlético Nacional running away with the group, the two sides are battling over the one remaining place and with last night’s three points, it is El Globo that have the upper hand.

In what was virtually a must-win game for Huracán, Eduardo Domínguez’s side got off to the worst possible start when Santiago Silva turned inside Federico Mancinelli and smashed the ball past Marcos Díaz after 15 minutes.

As he has done so often now, Ramón Ábila sparked the come back and his quick-fire brace turned the match in favour of Huracán. However, before anyone in the Estadio Tomás Ducó could relax, the visitors were level. Díaz failed to hold Irven Ávila’s shot, which appeared to be going wide, and Horacio Calcaterra was able to fire in the rebound.

In desperate need of a winner in the second half, the breakthrough came from a moment of genuine quality starting in the Huracán midfield. Daniel Montenegro threaded a superb ball into the channel for Ábila and the big centre-forward had the vision to roll the ball to the edge of the penalty area where youngster Alejandro Romero Gamarra was on hand to sweep the ball into the far corner.

With under ten minutes remaining the home side made sure of victory when Ezequiel Miralles headed in a fourth and with two group games remaining, qualification is in Huracán’s hands. Victory over Peñarol at home next week could seal it, provided Atlético Nacional continue their 100% record against Sporting Cristal.
