Estudiantes managed to keep on the heels of league leaders Lanús thanks to a retaken penalty deep into injury time by Jonathan Schunke in La Plata on Monday night.
Rodrigo Aliendro had given Atlético Tucumán an early lead when he skipped around goalkeeper Mariano Andujar with six minutes on the clock but El Pincha responded superbly. Two fabulous right-footed strikes from Gastón Fernández reversed the scoreline and ensured the home side led at the break despite having Carlos Auzqui sent off in the 38th minute.
With the numerical advantage, El Decano piled on the pressure in the second half and forced an equaliser with minutes remaining when Cristian Menéndez bundled in a second. The visitors looked the more likely winners but deep into stoppage time, Nicolás Talpone was bundled over by goalkeeper Cristian Lucchetti and presented a glorious opportunity to snatch all three points. Lucchetti thought he had redeemed himself when he dived to his left to palm away Schunke’s initial penalty but when the referee deemed that the goalkeeper had strayed from his line, he ordered the retake. Schunke made no mistake with the second and Estudiantes claimed the win to move to second in the table and remain three behind Lanús.
