2014 Copa Libertadores champions San Lorenzo face a second consecutive exit from the competition’s group stage after defeat in México against Toluca left El Ciclón in need of a huge amount of good fortune to progress.

Despite being thoroughly outplayed for large parts of the match and seeing the home side hit the woodwork twice, San Lorenzo led just before half time when Nicolás Blandi pounced on Liborio Sánchez’s failure to hold Martín Cauteruccio’s shot.

An unlikely victory looked possible until the 81st minute when Fernando Uribe outjumped two defenders to nod the ball beyond Sebastián Torrico and while a point would not have been much use to Pablo Guede’s side, it got worse.

Three minutes from time, more woeful defending from San Lorenzo allowed Toluca to line up before eventually Uribe smashed in his second and take all three points for the home side.

Before the final round of matches, San Lorenzo may already be out as Grêmio visit Liga de Quito this evening and if the Brazilians pick up three points they will secure second place. Anthing other than a Grêmio win and it will go to the sixth game but San Lorenzo will need a victory over Liga de Quito and hope that Toluca maintain their unbeaten record in Brazil.
