The Copa Libertadores group three clash between two of Argentinas’s grandes promised so much but despite failing to live up to the expectation, Boca Juniors celebrated an invaluable victory over Racing in Avellaneda to ensure their safe passage to the last 16.
A game with more questionable refereeing decision than clear chances was eventually decided in the 83rd minute when Cristian Pavón drilled a low ball across the Racing goalmouth and Nicolás Lodeiro arrived at the backpost to tap the ball into the net.
The three points doesn’t guarantee Boca win the group but Los Xeneizes are guaranteed a place in the next round and while this latest victory will not live long in the memory, Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s side should get credit for keeping out a prolific Racing attack.
Bolívar travel to Deportivo Cali this evening in group three’s other game but should the Bolivians claim a win it will create a very difficult final match for Racing, who must travel to La Paz in search of a result.
