Godoy Cruz missed leading scorer Santiago Garcia last weekend after suspension ruled him out of the draw with Gimnasia but the Uruguayan returned to the side on Saturday to hand El Tomba a crucial three points against San Martín. With time running out and the home side heading for a third match without a win, Garcia struck a fabulous free kick from 30 yards into the top corner and broke San Martín’s resolve. El Morro has shown himself an expert poacher with seven goals this season but his winner on Saturday was a moment of pure inspiration. Godoy Cruz remain top of zone one and with only four games remaining at least a place in next year’s Copa Libertadores looks a distinct possibility.
In Sarandí, Arsenal were hoping to keep pace with Godoy Cruz and San Lorenzo at the top of zone one but will undoubtedly look back on their goalless draw with Defensa y Justicia as two points dropped. The visitors had Ciro Rius sent off after only 19 minutes for hauling down Mariano Barbieri with the striker through on goal but conceding the vast majority of possession and not registering a shot on goal, El Halcón held on for a point. Arsenal remain just three points behind the leaders but have Independiente and Rosario Central poised to overtake.
