Marco Ruben’s early goal gave Rosario Central an invaluable 1-0 win away to Grêmio in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores last 16 clash on Wednesday night. The 29-year-old pounced on the home side’s failure to deal with a ball bouncing in the penalty area and made no mistake in smashing his volley past Marcelo Grohe at the back post with 13 minutes on the clock.

Despite the early goal, both sides carved out openings, with Miller Bolañoz blazing over a glorious opportunity for Grêmio and Ruben hitting the crossbar with an exquisite lob.

Central were good value for their win and now hold a commanding advantage in the tie ahead of next Thursday’s second leg in Rosario.

Grêmio  0 – 1  Rosario Central
