It wasn’t too long ago that Vélez Sarsfield were consistently one of Argentina’s top sides but having sold a number of important players, El Fortín have gradually declined and following on from a couple of disappointing championships, Christian Bassedas’ side now find themselves eliminated from the Copa Argentina by Nacional B side, Juventud Unida.
Mariano Pavone looked to have won it for Vélez when he headed them in front eight minutes from time but Ricardo Villalba levelled it before the end when he flicked a free kick beyond Alan Aguerre.
The tie was forced into penalties and when Pavone saw his effort saved by Lucas de León it handed the lower league side victory.
Deportivo Laferrere or Almagro await in the last 16 while Vélez appear to have a lot of work to do a week before the Primera season begins.
