Diego Aguirre made a rocky start to life as San Lorenzo coach on Tuesday evening after his side fell to a 2-0 loss against Banfield in the Estadio Florencio Sola. First half goals from Jorge Rodríguez and Brian Sarmiento put El Taladro firmly in control and with the visitors unable to muster even a consolatory away goal, there is much to do when the sides meet again on September 13th in Bajo Flores.
After a difficult Transición, Julio Cesar Falcioni’s side started brightly and were rewarded after only five minutes when youngster Jorge Rodríguez was left in acres of space and powered a header past Sebastián Torrico.
San Lorenzo came close to an equaliser on a couple of occasions but shortly before half time Brian Sarmiento bent in a free kick to double the lead.
Understandably Los Cuervos were on the front foot in the second half in an effort to reduce the deficit but were unable to find a way through a Banfield defence that looked far more resolute than it did at any point last season.
With three weeks now until the second leg, Diego Aguirre has much work to do with his San Lorenzo side.
