There was no doubting how much the Recopa Sudamericana meant to Marcelo Gallardo and his side when the final whistle blew and for the second consecutive year River Plate were crowned champions. It has been something of a difficult year since lifting the Copa Libertadores but an emotional Gallardo lifted yet another international title with Los Millonarios.
Following the goalless draw last week in Bogotá the tie needed a goal and it took just three minutes for that to arrive as Gonzalo Martínez whipped over a cross from the left and Sebastián Driussi converted from close range.
River were good value for their lead over the first half and just five minutes after the break it was doubled.
Jonathan Maidana headed the ball towards the six-yard box and the much sought after Lucas Alario climbed above everyone to power the ball past Robinson Zapata.
Independiente Santa Fe managed to make the final 20 minutes interesting when Horacio Salaberry nodded the ball beyond Augusto Batalla but River held on for a fourth international trophy under Marcelo Gallardo.
