After a couple of goalless draws Saturday’s Primera action was in desperate need of action and despite Ricardo Zielinski facing a difficult away trip to San Martín for his first match as Racing coach, La Academia delivered.
Marcos Acuña poked the visitors in front early and despite having to soak up a little bit of pressure, ten minutes from time the points were sealed. Acuña’s low cross found Gastón Díaz unmarked at the back post and the defender made no mistake in smashing the ball past Luis Ardente.
Earlier in Bahía Blanca, champions Lanús were frustrated by Olimpo and held to a competitive goalless draw in which both sides had chances. Most of the home sides near misses came thanks to a shaky afternoon in the Lanús goal by Fernando Monetti but as they failed to take advantage, El Granate also misfired in front of goal.
Miguel Almirón came from the bench and almost handed the visitors victory but Nereo Champagne’s outstretched leg just about diverted the ball over the bar. The champions still have several gears to move up and have an important Copa Sudamericana tie to turnaround against Independiente on Thursday.
Banfield were also preparing for a crunch Copa Sudamericana tie next week but played out a pretty even goalless draw with Colón in the Estadio Florencio Solá.
