Diego Aguirre will certainly be hoping that his side’s inability to completely kill off their Copa Sudamericana tie against La Guaira will not come back to haunt them after San Lorenzo recorded a 2-1 first leg victory in the Nuevo Gasómetro but in reality should have been far more comfortable.
The in-form Fernando Belluschi put Los Cuervos ahead after ten minutes with an accurately placed free-kick that dipped over the wall and left goalkeeper Felipe Núñez rooted to the spot and the opening 45 minutes got even better for the home side when Nicolás Blandi doubled the lead.
Such was San Lorenzo’s superiority that it looked as though the tie may already be over but credit to the Venezuelan visitors as they certainly made the second half uncomfortable. Franklin Lucena nodded a goal back shortly after the break for what may still be an important away goal and Diego Aguirre’s side were unable to extend their advantage.
The sides will meet next Thursday in Caracas with plenty of work still to do.
