River Plate were handed a first defeat of the season on Sunday evening as they were caught undone by Patronato in Paraná, just as they were in the Transición earlier in the year.
The home side have been in dreadful form and were without a win in the new league season so when the impressive Sebastián Driussi slotted the visitors in front after only seven minutes it looked as though it would be another defeat for the relegation threatened minnows.
However, Rubén Forestello’s side remained a threat and it was not entirely surprising when River’s creaking defence conceded to a Gabriel Vargas header. Both sides sensed victory but as the game edged in stoppage time it was Patronato that snatched it thanks to Lucas Márquez. In seven minutes of added time, River had debutant Denis Rodríguez sent off and unable to force an equaliser, Marcelo Gallardo’s side slumped to a surprise defeat.
San Lorenzo meanwhile continued their impressive form with a 3-1 win over Arsenal in Sarandí. Diego Aguirre’s side were in midweek Copa Argentina action but showed no signs of tiredness as Martín Cauteruccio proved that Nicolás Blandi isn’t the only number nine in Bajo Flores.
The Uruguayan was sensational and opened the scoring in the 12th minute with an exquisitely taken goal after twisting and turning away from three Arsenal defenders. Shortly after Cauteruccio doubled the lead rifling in from the edge of the penalty area and ten minutes after half time he completed his hat-trick with a powerful turn and shot.
Renso Pérez managed a late consolation but Arsenal’s winless start to the season goes on while San Lorenzo appear the team to beat at this early stage.
Despite missing several players through injury, Newell’s maintained their impressive start to the season with a 1-0 win over Gimnasia thanks to a late goal from one of those players brought into the side, Víctor Figueroa.
The visitors had Manuel Guanini sent off shortly after half time and eventually the home side’s pressure told as Figueroa steered Mauricio Tévez’s low cross into the net with fifteen minutes remaining.
