Racing’s last hope of Copa Libertadores qualification was extinguished on Wednesday after Gimnasia claimed a 1-0 win to set up a quarter final clash with San Lorenzo.
Ricardo Zielinski’s side were well below their best, as they were in the defeat to Atlético de Rafaela at the weekend, and ultimately the two goalkeepers were decisive.
Agustín Orión fumbled a free kick swung into a crowded Racing six-yard box and allowed Daniel Imperiale to poke in the only goal shortly after half time while at the other end Alexis Arias repelled any attempt of an equaliser that La Academia could muster.
Gimnasia will play San Lorenzo for a place in the semi final with Belgrano the only side already guaranteed a spot in the last four.
