Last week’s 2-0 win in the Nuevo Gasómetro proved to be just enough for San Lorenzo after an uncomfortable evening in Santiago left Diego Aguirre’s side sweating until the final whistle. Los Cuervos ventually secured their place in the Copa Sudamericana semi-finals at the expense of Palestino but slumped to a 1-0 defeat in the second leg.
The Chileans were certainly the better side and had their chances but were unable to find an early goal to really increase the pressure on San Lorenzo and it wasn’t until Fernando Belluschi was harshly sent off in the second half that Palestino reduced the deficit.
With twenty minutes remaining Leonardo Valencia curled in a superb free-kick but it failed to set up a grandstand finish. Ten-man San Lorenzo held on and will now face Chapecoense for a place in the final.
