Atlético Rafaela spell the end for Lavallén at San Martín, Beccacece suffers late comeback on Defensa y Justicia debut & Gimnasia draw with Unión (VIDEO)
Hopes of survival still seem bleak but Atlético de Rafaela claimed an invaluable 3-0 win away to San Martín on Monday night in their efforts to climb out of the drop zone. What had been quite an even match was decided by La Crema’s more decisive finishing and has already led San Martín to part ways with coach Pablo Lavallén. Gabriel Gudiño slotted the visitors ahead early and when El Verdinegro couldn’t force an equaliser, Kevin Itabel and Mauro Albertengo added two late goals to make the victory all the more emphatic.
In Florencio Varela, Sebastián Beccacece suffered a heartbreaking debut as Defensa y Justicia coach after being minutes away from a win only to have all three points snatched from him by Patronato. Nicolás Stefanelli’s firmly struck shot on the half hour mark looked as though it would be the match winner but Alejandro Gagliardi headed an equaliser two minutes from time and almost immediately after Nicolás Bertochi added a second. The second half substitute’s looping header provided Patronato with a fifth win in six games and left Defensa y Justicia still sweating over relegation with just one victory all season.
Gimnasia’s attention this week is on Thursday evening’s Copa Argentina semi final against River Plate but Gustavo Alfaro’s side first needed to welcome Unión to La Plata. The visitors took an early lead when Diego Godoy thrashed the ball past Alexis Arias but Franco Niell equalised before half time and El Lobo held on for a share of the points.
