Diego Cocca’s second debut as Racing manager was brought to an abrupt end by referee Jorge Baliño on Thursday evening as torrential rain hammered down in Mar del Plata while La Academia were drawing 1-1 with Gimnasia.
An error by Agustín Orion in failing to claim a free kick into the penalty area allowed Nicolás Contín to head Gimnasia in front and as the weather continued to worsen Racing’s task was made even more difficult.
Racing were without Oscar Romero, after being sold to China, and Marcos Acuña wasn’t risked through injury and the result was a dearth of creativity behind Gustavo Bou and Lisandro López.
However, with the rain pouring down, Sergio Vittor headed an equaliser before the pitch became unplayable. Less than five minutes remained when Baliño decided to call if off and neither manager is likely to have been upset at that decision.
