Uruguay’s earlier victory over Bolivia had already ensured Argentina’s safe passage to the Sudamericano final stage but Los Pibes maintained their unbeaten record in the tournament regardless albeit with a lacklustre goalless draw against Venezuela.
Captain Santiago Ascacibar was rested but otherwise Argentina were unchanged from the side that thrashed Bolivia. However, there was to be no repeat as Claudio Úbeda’s side laboured in possession and failed to ever really get going.
Cristian Romero was sent off late on for the second time in the competition and Úbeda will be more than aware that his side need to make significant improvements in the final stage if they are to secure World Cup qualification and/or challenge for the title.
Argentina face Uruguay for the second time on Monday following their 3-3 draw as the matches come thick and fast in the final.
